FAQ: How do I remove the paste and take care of my tattoo?

Henna Aftercare

Henna aftercare is an important part of receiving a henna tattoo. Taking care of your tattoo after you receive it will ensure that the stain will be dark and that it will last 7-10 days. Follow these instructions as best you can!

1 – Leave the paste on for as long as you can

Leave it on for at least 2 hours. 6 hours or more is ideal but I understand that this is not feasible all the time. For kids, I usually tell them they can scrape it off after it dries. The tattoo will not get super dark but it will be visible for about 4 days and even this is very exciting for kids. If you have received bridal henna or pregnancy henna from me, then try to leave the paste on overnight! The tattoo can be covered in flexible medical tape (which I provide for my bridal and pregnancy customers) which can allow you to keep the paste on for longer.

2 – Remove the paste without using water

Pinch or scrape the paste off using fingernails, a credit card, or rub it with a rough cloth that is not wet. It’s important not to use water when removing the paste, as this will lighten the stain and shorten its duration. If there are stubborn bits that won’t come off, then put some oil or Henna Aftercare Balm on the spots, rub in, and then scrape off. You may need to let the pieces soak in the oil a bit before removing. If your tattoo is covered in medical tape, then removing the tape sometimes brings the paste with it, which makes paste removal very easy, as seen in the video below.

Your tattoo stain will start out being bright orange, but will darken to a rich brown/red color over the next few days.

3 – Avoid water for as long as possible

Exposing your tattoo to water while the stain is developing can lighten the stain and shorten its duration. Try to wait 24 hours before exposing your tattoo to water. I find it difficult to do this, so don’t worry if you’re not able to make it the full time. This is just a guideline, and if you are going for a very dark color then it’s important you consider doing this! I try to cover my hand with a disposable glove before getting in the shower.

If you must get it wet, then cover it with aftercare balm first! More about that next.

4 – Use henna aftercare balm to moisturize your tattoo

Before you hop in the shower, slather some aftercare balm onto your tattoo. The beeswax in the balm helps to create a barrier that the water can roll off of. Doing this will lengthen the life of your tattoo. You can buy aftercare balm from me at any of my booths, or tell me you’d like to purchase one at your Coffee Shop Henna appointment and I’ll have one for you!
